Pass the birthday mustard

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the greatest culinary advance in human history: The sandwich.

Let all pause for a moment of reverent silence.

The sandwich in the picture, what's the recipe? It looks appealing.

Now there's a guy who should be on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square.

Jason, that is the noble Reuben sandwich; a marvellous concoction of rye bread, corned (salt) beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and a decent mustard served hot and the only messy sandwich that I welcome because of the certain proximity of beer.

Actually, and forgive me if I've said this before, the article does make the point that it's a little odd that in several millenia of human's eating bread and meat, nobody ever thought of slapping some meat bewteen two slices of bread before the Earl of Sandwich?

Was he merely the fashionable face of staple which had been in the hands of peasants for centuries?

Or, was he the one man with the devine spark of genius to realise the potential?

Btw, David, I am now drooling over my keyboard. -sigh-

David, thanks for the enlightenment. I'll have to see if such confections are available here in Brenham.
