Taxing the monarch

The Sovereign Grant Bill replaces the Civil List, which means that those evil, lazy parasitic Royals who live off the public teat will only be taxed at a rate of 85 percent.

How generous.

Does monarchy really belong in the 21st century anymore?

GB would do itself and the rest of the world a major service if they kicked the remnants of the Feudalism off and abolished both monarchy and nobility and instead converted to republic and democracy. Kings and queens belong in the fairy tales, not to 21st century.

Republicanism and democracy are much older than the British monarchy. Should they be abolished just because they are old?

Republicans belong in fairy tales. get with the times.

I must say, I thought the spokesman for "Republic" was hilarious.

"Pegging Royal funding to Crown Estate revenue makes no sense at all, the two are not related. Crown Estate revenue has always been there to provide funds to the government"

Comedy genius.

After all, it's not like the Crown Estates used to belong to the Crown, and were signed over to parliament in exchange for the Civil List, is it?

Is it?

It would appear that knowledge of English History has gone to join the public understanding of physics...

David, monarchy and democracy are mutually exclusive. It simply is morally wrong to bestow hereditary power over people to someone who has merely been born in a privileged family. The concept of hereditary power does not belong in the modern era.

Anon: That is rot on the face of it and you know it. Britain is a democracy and has been the model of democratic rule for the world.
