We'll overlook the fact that most rigs today are portable and move to a new site once they've done their job while the stationary ones tend to rust into uselessness in the blink of an eye. I'm more concerned about the fact that oil rigs tend to be less in the French Riviera and more in the North Sea, which, I can confirm from white-knuckled experience, is less of a holiday spot and more of a very wobbly version of the Alps with gales thrown in for good measure.
Cuts down on the jet skiing, I can tell you.

Also, converting oil rigs to playgrounds for the "eco-conscious" elite' at a time when we don't have enough energy to go around seems to me to be rather like cutting off our noses to spite our faces, as my mother would day.
Either that, or it's the "eco-cool" crowd rubbing our noses in their "(bleep) you, I've got mine" attitude.

Given the "Drop of Roughers" the North Sea generally experiences I have a suggestion. We cpuld replicate the role of the Golgafrincian "B Ark" and get certain people to "prepare" these environments for future occupation... And then leave the entire thing in the Committee stage. The benefits are self evident!
