I hate the snobbery of it. I hate food being overworked. Most chefs paint pictures on plates to hide their lack of technical ability. They are doing it for themselves, not for their guests.

Hear hear. I'm all for nice-looking food, but if it's at the expense of quantity (for I am a greedy pig) then i'm opposed.
Also, sorry for posting two comments; but the picture you posted reminds me of the tower of soup in Black Books. :D
