Battle of Britain Day

The spitfire had incredible maneuvering capabilities. Mitsubishi Zero was probably the only WW2 fighter with a lower wing loading. The only way a German Bf-109 pilot could destroy a Spitfire was by building up speed and trying to shoot it at a rate of overtake totally unfit for aiming. If a 109 was caught at a lower speed, it was a guaranteed kill. It's wing loading, and with it the ability to make tight turns, was incomparable to that of the Spit.

The Spitfire was a beautiful machine, but I'd say that the honor should go to the heroes who brought the Spitfires to life, and the country that stood alone against Hitler's armies until we Yanks got our act together.
