Peugeot Blade

Another oddity from the 2008 Peugeot Design Contest: The Blade.

Allegedly, the propeller in the back is supposed to "improve efficiency", though I suspect that it's real purpose is to pick off any birds that the grill and windscreen fail to take out.

Well, that makes sense. You see, the propeller harvests energy from the air moving past the vehicle, and that charges the battery, which in turn spins the wheels and makes with the relative wind. Which spins the propeller Make a sufficiently large propeller and you won't have to burn any gas or diesel at all, except maybe for a small initial push to get the thing started! Brilliant!

(The art and engineering schools were on the same campus at my university. We used to laugh at the artsies. We never knew why, but it somehow seemed like the right thing to do.)

I always wondered if the energy required to vaccuumm up the air in front of a car would be more or less than that lost to air resistance.

The prop should be on the front as in an old 'Modern Mechanix' magazine cover.

Nah! the prop should be on the driver's beanie-hat.

I think that what you are describing can be improved by burning some fuel in the tube between the input and the output fans, and calling it a jet engine. Helps you go fast, and as a bonus, helps discourage tailgaters.

Yes it does feel justified to make fun of "artsies", especially if they are all full of themselves and think they are doing something more "noble" than engineers and scientists. And ESPECIALLY since engineering/scientific kids are mocked in elementary school.

As for the car, I think it would be better to put a couple of propellers in front of its nose, covering the entire frontal area of the car, because then they would take away some of the kinetic energy of the air that would otherwise produce air resistance.

Funny, in the 50s we wanted cars to look like spaceships and jet planes, this looks as though we want to make cars that look like Curtiss JN-4s.
Not exactly a forward step
