The president was concerned by a lack of strategy at his first meeting with Gates and the US joint chiefs of staff last month in “the tank”, the secure conference room in the Pentagon. He asked: “What’s the endgame?” and did not receive a convincing answer.I suspect that's because the Chairman of the JCOS's reply was along the lines of : "Um, Mr President, it's your job to tell us that. You give the orders, we carry them out".

The Nuclear option is not off the table.
The next 911, if nuclear (dirty bomb) will earn a thermonuclear response.
If Pakistan doesn't have control of it's western states, it shouldn't be too unhappy to have them destroyed.
That's Pahkeestaan, you parochial-type person. And, I can see a couple of ways a dirty bomb could arrive with no return address. For a terrorist mindset, I would even think this better: a bomb goes off, and then Iran just happens to hold a successful nuclear test, and next day Little Hairy Dwarf is in the paper with Iran's other bomb (they built more than one!). Nice country you have there, even though it's now one city short. Pity if it were to become two cities short. I don't think the threshold with Iran is going to be when they build one bomb, but when they build two.
If the enemies of the US think the place is full of cowboys, who just might turn all their caves and goat-paddocks into a parking lot, maybe they'll think at least once before clenching their filthy fists. I'm not sure how terrified these people would be of a strongly worded memo, though.
