No, no...they *compromised*.
That sounds like an improbable method of detecting exosolar planets.
However...
It is a good method of detecting exosolar civializations, at least those with laser technology.
Extreamely short but high powered flashes should be detectable over hundreds of light years.
(As some SETI guys have already said.)
