Hitting a moving target

From the BBC:
The British Bloodhound car will need "bullet-proof wheels" when it tries to break the land speed record in 2012.
I never knew that rivalry in the land-speed record contest was so serious.

It is just that any loose gravel on the road will have the kinetic energy of a bullet.

If the front wheels eject any loose gravel or small stones at those speeds, they will get an awful lot of kinetic energy - and may well damage, even pierce, the rear wheels.

What a buzz-kill, Ironmistress! Anyway, I prefer caltrops. Or spiky wheel hubs, if racing side by side.

Well, the British Secret Service has a long tradition on spiked hubs, if the James Bond flicks are to be believed :-)
