Trying to attack the Conservative leader for allegedly wearing make up in an advert has to be the silliest idea in the history of politics.
Politicians have been wearing make up in front of cameras ever since Richard Nixon refused it when he debated John Kennedy on television and came across as unshaven and sweaty–an image that lost him the election. If nothing else, it's a ploy so open to counterattack that it's a bit like building a bunker out of spun sugar.

I believe they're going for manly-manness. As in, "our candidate is authentically masculine". And I thought androgynous metrosexualness was in this week.
If what Sergej says is true, the next ad can be expected to have the candidate's kids on it, Brown's berating the other by saying; "My dad can find more things to tax than your dad!"
Apparently the "tough guy" thing is only for campaigns however, much like here in the US
At first sight of that image, I thought "cement overcoat," and it took a bit for the cosmetics angle to register.
