It shouldn't look like a searchlight.
It should look like Professor Brainard's (McMurray not Williams) Flubbergun, crossed with Goldfinger's Spyslicer, with a nod to the Fleischer Electrothanasia-Ray emitter, and a smidge of Dr. Shrinker's shrink ray gun.
