It Wasn't Santa

I have officially concluded that I'm living in the country. Not only did we see a deer walking down the road last night, but we also discovered that Chez Szondy is home to a colony of brown bats. Our first reaction was relief that all the droppings we found in the garden weren't from rats and our second was "Cool, we've got bats" with a resolution to build a bat house in the garden to encourage more of the little mosquito-eaters to settle.

Our third reaction came a few hours later when we learned the important lesson that when one is host to bats, one should keep the chimney flue closed, otherwise one will get some rather alarming visitors flying out of the fireplace.

(For the concerned, the bat did get out okay; thanks to the judicious use of a firescreen, a blanket and some careful
manouevering.)
