I'd like to recount a story I posted at TechTales.com.
I had an obsolete pager whose service had expired. (or the carrier had, I forget which) Useless as a pager but it would still get news, sports and weather headlines. It would 'beep' when a new message was available.
I run a one-man computer shop fixing home PCs.
One of my clients cheated me out of $100 (my fault for not immedietly pocketing the payment while copying the invoice.)
Months later he had the nerve to get it serviced by me again!
I fixed it, put a fresh battery in the useless pager, set it to beep when messages were updated and hid it in a void area in the PC's front cover.
It would beep once at random time intervals even when the computer was unplugged.
