The EU's response to the current financial crisis smacks less of unity than reality–especially in Germany:
Germany's Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck made clear his government's opposition to the idea that the euro zone's single largest economy should put up money to prop up institutions outside his country. He said Monday that he and Chancellor Angela Merkel were considering creating a "shield" that would protect the country's entire financial sector, and that a Europe-wide shield or bailout was out of the question. "The chancellor and I reject a European shield because we as Germans do not want to pay into a big pot where we do not have control and do not know where German money might be used," he said in a separate interview with WDR 2 radio.
It looks like cracks in the euro-empire are appearing ten years sooner than I'd predicted. Excellent. The sooner this happens the more peaceful the break up of that Napoleonic monstrosity will be.

Considering that Europe is the home of such scintillating minds like Silvio Berlusconi and Jorg Haider, the brake-up could get nasty.
If it gets as bloody and full of hate as our fairly recent Balkans war, then they will have my respect.

I think what I actually meant was that they would better understand our Balkan problems if they went through something similar by themselves.
The reason why I'm saying this is because this summer I saw some elderly people from the Benelux countries on a tour through Sarajevo. As the guide explained what happened during the siege, those people seemed unable to comprehend his words.
They couldn't understand why was there so much cruelty between peoples that don't seem to have any real cultural differences, and frankly neither can I, but I got used to it.
I think this sentence sums it up very nicely:
"We may not have had top equipment, but with hatred and dedication we made it spectacular !"
I'm not sure what the troubles in the Balkans have on EU Unity but I did like Steinbrueck's comment that he did not like the idea of a pot of money and not knowing where it would be used - Surely that is what Germany does every year when it pays it's EU contributions...
Sorry. I always start moaning about the damn Balkans.
.........and let's not forget about Comrade Brown's comments against 'protectionism'. Were it not for the internet we would never learn the truth about 'our masters'. Another reason the EU must be abolished. Free trade - sure, why not? EUSSR - Never!!
