I've always felt the problem has to do with not being able to look the person on the phone in the eye. To do that you have to look at the camera up over the screen and then you aren't looking at the image. It's unnerving. I don't see why they don't make vidiphones like television teleprompters with the camera shooting straight through a reflected image of the caller. Seems like it would make the calling experience more natural and more acceptable.

You would need a gooseneck webcam positioned over the center of the screen.
Fold it out of the way when not in use.
