What Is Thy Bidding, My Master?

One of the more disappointing aspects of the 21st century is that we're still lacking really cool 3D displays. Realising that you can't hope to have a suitably dramatic audience with the Galactic Emperor without a decent holographic interface, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Keio University and Burton Inc of Japan have developed a neat little prototype that uses focused lasers to produce visible bursts of plasma in the air rather than optical illusions to produce a 3D image.

It may not look like much, being just a collection of dots in midair, but then, early television displays weren't much to look at, as this full size image on the left of an early broadcast reminds us.

Tip o' the hat to Sci Fi Tech.
