Mind you, "looking silly" is partly down to hindsight. Compare Dr Purves to Mr Benz, sitting on his rickety tricycle spluttering along the road in a cloud of blue smoke, instead of using a horse and cart like any sensible person...
Mind you, I'm not saying he doesn't look silly; just that looking silly often turns out to be a harbinger of the future
