Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.Depends on how you define "nothing". Given that, by definition, God is also the author of the space/time continuum and everything else that isn't Himself, which means that the law of gravity is also a created thing requiring a primary cause and hence cannot create anything ex nihilo, I suspect that Mr Hawking is leaving out a step or two from his argument.
By the way, according to Mr Hawking, not only is God dead, but so is philosophy.
