Not exactly the comparison I would make. But that's because I'm not sure that we've seen exactly this situation before. Man-to-man, any civilized country could beat the jihadniks, but there's the lack of will, and Russia and China sticking their fingers into the situation, and the changes to be anticipated when (I assume) Iran gets the bomb.
The proposed mosque is only the tip of the iceberg. George W. Bush wisely declined to weigh in. Hussein Husseinovich did as well, but at greater length---I haven't been keeping score, but I think he's pretty much blown hot for every time he's blown cold, and cold for every time he's blown hot on this, adding up to zero. If life were a comic book, he'd have a perpetual speech bubble, large and empty, suspended over his head.
