I've often contended that the problem with modern Western society isn't so much the collapse of morality as the rot migrating from the aristocracy downwards as rich men's vices become those of poor men as well.Unfortunately, only the rich and powerful can afford to be decadent–and even then it catches up with them in the end.
Update: Decadence is a two-way street and when it flows up, the results can be worse than when it flows down.
