They put this down to heroin addicts, but I'd think that bacon addicts is more likely.

  2. So there's this bunch of soldiers in the French Foreign Legion, marching through the desert, see? Enormous heat, little water, sun beating down, insert your favorite cliche from the moving pictures
here. They are experienced, battle-hardened veterans. As they walk they see mirages: oases of water, air-conditioned coffee shops, dusky maidens beckoning them to come closer. They have see it all, and they march on. Suddenly, the officer in charge of the patrol sees---a bacon tree! Qui, qui? A bacon tree? The officer looks again, but it's still there!

"Regardez, Pierre," says he, "Ah t'ink zat Ah zee un bacon tree."

    "Un bacon tree?"

"Oui, oui. Lookez tu oveh dere."

"Indeed, Jean-Jacques, eet eez un bacon tree!"

So the patrol goes over to investigate. The men approach the site of the alleged bacon tree cautiously, crawling on their bellies to get over the last sand dune, when suddenly the tops of the neighboring dunes erupt with hundreds of Berber types (refer once more to your favorite black-and-white desert classic), uttering blood-curdling battle cries and shooting their muskets.

"Jean-Jacques," says Pierre as the bullets thud around him, "Ah do not t'ink zat eet eez un bacon tree. Rather, Ah believe zat ees eez un ham bush."
