Nigel, please don't tell this bunch that EU$1B isn't enough to bail out Spain, but EU$4B is. They'll immediately try to give Spain six or seven billion Euros from... somewhere.
ReplyDeleteGreece bailing won't kill the EU. It would be more like abuse of a corpse. You can't really kill something that's already dead, anymore than you can sink a ship that's already on the way to Davy Jones' Locker with a whacking great hole in it.
I was pleased to hear at least some applause for Mr. Farage's statement. But I'm afraid it came mainly from the back-benchers.
The People Who Matter are still sticking their fingers in their ears and going "LaLaLaLaLaLa, I Can't Heaaarrr Youuuuu!!"

There are obviously multiple---what do you call them? narratives?---going on. Broadly, the great fault line seems to be, do you trust the pretty theory or the evidence of your lying eyes? (In the United States, I think that the pretty theory narrative is the only thing that's kept a certain cynophagous chief executive whom I could name (Barry) from having been run out of town on a rail a long time ago.)
ReplyDeleteUnless I'm missing something, the only ones still hoping for the best from the EU are the cynics who stand to make a buck, collapse or no; the ones who feel that there is a wolf being held by the ears, and are shutting their eyes and hoping that something good will happen; and the pretty theory boys. I wonder why Mr. Farage is allowed to come in and speak at all.
