Checking the odds

Headline from the Bloomberg Businessweek:
A Hot Dog a Day Raises Risk of Dying, Harvard Study Finds
You mean raises it above 100 percent?

  1. No, according to the article, it only raises the risk of dying from heart disease or cancer. For all we know, this is because it provides some kind of protection against stroke and infectious diseases. Or death by violent accident. Maybe the extra cushion of girth protects one from fatal damage in a car crash? Or starvation when lost in the woods?

    If I were on the Hot Dog Advertising Board, I totally think I could spin this in my favor.
