I wouldn't say Bullitt's Mustang couldn't exist in the real world. It was an off-the-shelf GT with the 302 four-barrel and four-speed manual (240 BHP). The only mods to it were a race-ready suspension (a factory option if you knew which boxes to check on the order sheet) and full racing harnesses for the driver and cameraman.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, in the chase sequence, when Bullitt misses the turn at the bottom of the hill and does a tire-smoking reverse; that wasn't scripted. McQueen actually did miss the turn. And being a racing driver in his spare time, knew just what to do. That's why they left it in.
