ReplyDeleteAnd FWIW, the BAC/EE Lightning could scramble, climb to 70,000 feet(at a rate of 2 everests in 3 minutes) catch and overtake Concorde IN A TAILCHASE. It was the only Nato fighter which could.

The Lightning had 2 disadvantages, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteThe cockpit was really cramped (but OK for people under 5 ft 6).
The range was too short at 800 miles; JUST enough for a Shetlands/Fair Isles Bear intercept.
