The planet that takes up Earth's orbit had ready to occupy cities and ready to drive cars! Also... The Commies had their own rocket and the USA's survivors shot them down.

Of course, back then this wasn't presented as polluting Paradise, as it would likely be now. Back then it was, "even Paradise has a snake, and some cleaning of house must be done to make it habitable.
But I think the last time I read these books I was in my early undergrad, and they might not be as I remember them. Damn book elves keep changing things around if I don't keep re-reading!
Ah yes, now I remember! I recall checking the (c) dates on the first and second novels, way back when I read them. First book, Germans were presented as fine engineers with perhaps too much of a perfectionist streak, and second... history had started to unfold a little out here in the real world.
Well, since the interwebs are coming out of my apartment walls now (along with mice, it seems), I'll be able to participate in discussions here again.

The 'Axis of Evil' (Germans, Japanese and Russians) did land successfully, and only later attacked the other settlement.
They used knockout gas but were shot down before their troops could land.
The atomic engines were taken off the rocketship and converted to anti-aircraft beam weapons.
